15 May is a nice date on Thule Air Base, It marks the end of the Storm season, and the beginning of the summer.

During the short summer (15. May - 15. October), the base is like an anthill, all construction, resupply and maintenance has to be carried out while there is light and warm weather.

This is also the period for "Thule Tripping" (walk/drive off-base) and that is what this page is about.

The Thule defense area have a lot of nice places to go to, to name a few; Camp TUTO (the ice cap), North Mountain (view of the three glaciers), Lake Crescent (waterfall), D-Launch and Mt. Dundas.

During the summer we have 24 hour sunlight, so no matter when you get of work you has a chance to enjoy the area.

During the short summer all sort of activities take place at TAB, i.e. the annual Raft Regatta, a sailing regatta for home made rafts (picture on a later date), or what about BOXTOP Olympics, a contest in basketball, badminton etc. held during the BOXTOP operations (resupply of the Canadian station Alert).

Also there is a golf tournament on top of Mt. Dundas, you climb the mountain while your gear is air lifted to the top by helicopter.

If you have the guts for it, you could take part in the annual "Polar bear Swim", a nice swim among Icebergs in the bay.

All year round there is several ways to relax.
  • Large Gymnasium with all in fitness equipment.
  • Eight bowling lanes
  • Library with a large selection of books, magazines, music and video.
  • Hobby shop, where you can make all sorts of ceramic, wood and leather things.
  • Radio 5OZ20, the Danish local radio, where you can be the DJ and buy CD's.

And then there is "The top of the world Club" often called "The blue container", here you find a good restaurant, a bar, dancehall in the weekends and more.

So as you can see, there is no reason to be passive during your stay.

This is a personal story from Charles B. Carroll, mailed to me on June 12 2007

I have another story. While in Thule in '62-'63 I bought a Tandberg recorder and recorded all my record albums that I had brought with me. I then donated the entire record collection to radio station KOLD. Just a couple of years ago I read a guest book entry on another Thule website that the writer had enjoyed all the jazz music played on KOLD. And that was in the '80s or '90s
