Winter this close to the North Pole is cold and long, in this period everything is frozen solid, the ice in North Star Bay will be around 7 feet thick and will not disappear until late June.

During the winter month everything is idle, nothing happens, its to cold, but if there is no wind and the moon is up, it is nice to go for a walk, the air is very clean up here.

Most of our snow comes secondhand, it is blown of the icecap by phases (high velocity winds), and after a phase, were no one is permitted outside, the snow on the ground can be 6 feet thick and hard as concrete

Because of its northern location, Thule experiences constant darkness from November until February and constant sunlight from May to August.

Average winter temperature range from 25 to 29 degrees Celsius below zero, with 65 degrees below zero being the lowest recorded reading.

Summer temperatures normally range from 0 to 7 degrees with the highest recorded reading being 20 degrees.

During the winter months, snow storms is normal in the Thule area, occurring in three degrees of severity.

  • Storm One

  • is declared when winds reach 20 to 30 knots and visibility is reduced to half a mile.

  • Storm Two

  • is declared when winds increase to 30 to 50 knots and visibility decreases to a quarter mile.

  • Storm Three

  • Winds exceed 50 knots and visibility is less than a quarter mile.

During a Storm Three in March 1972, a wind velocity of 207 miles per hour was recorded.

During the storm in 1996 the peak wind on base was 124 knots and off base 193 knots, so you might imagine how hard the snow had become.

What is the actual day each February when the Sun's sliver can be seen for the
first time barely above the horizon ..if only for a few moments??

I was at Thule in 75-76. The story at that time was that the 207 MPH wind was
really "in excess of 207 as that's where the anemometer blew away." It
was also noted as being the second highest wind on the face of the earth at that
time. Don't know how true any of that is, but that's my story.

I remember hearing that exact story in 1983.... My recollection was that the
gust was reported at Phase Shack 7...7 is located in that little ravine area
which would funnel and increase the wind speed...

I was at TAB oct '57 to Oct '58, 11 ADS. Supply Sgt.

I remember being only 11 above. Bus ran off road on way back to dorm-tilted at a
    45. 2 cracked ribs when 3 from across aisle fell on me. It was during a phase 2,
later we were in qtrs for 2 weeks. Thanks for the memories.

I was stationed in Thule 1971-72. Worked in the Base Post Office. I remember
being stuck in the NCO Club for 2-3 days during the Big Storm and we ended up
eating canned mushrooms toward the end.

I was there in feb, 1962 and then some. I seem to recall the temp hitting 85
    below. Am I wrong?

You article states it only hit 65 below.

it was the job of the mats crew at hanger 8 to prepare all aircraft for the
return flight winter was just not quite as busy. every small task took longer.
refueling aircraft at 25 below with a wind was the worst. towing an aircraft on
ice was a hazard. keeping the 8 huge hanger doors free of ice was a full time
job. we worked outside at times in phase 2 conditions.
